Atos wins major UK IT outsourcing contract

Atos, an international IT services company, announced that it has been awarded a five-year IT outsourcing contract worth £140 million by the Shared Services Alliance (SSA), a collaborative procurement initiative within the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

The NDA is a non departmental public body reporting into the Department of Energy and Climate Change. It is responsible for decommissioning and the clean-up of the UK's civil nuclear waste in a safe, secure and cost-effective way. The SSA was set up in 2009 to ensure all members could achieve the best value for money by aggregating demand for common services, including IT.

This new contract is the first IT contract to be awarded by the SSA and covers all IT services for four members, namely Sellafield, Magnox, National Nuclear Laboratories and Low Level Waste Repository. It is a multi-service contract, comprising 18 service towers networking, desktops, applications and hosting services, as well as Service Integration and Management (SIAM).

Under the contract, Atos will consolidate and modernise the existing infrastructure to further improve service for more than 18,000 end users located at more than 30 separate locations. These improvements will deliver savings of more than 30% over 5 years to the four businesses that have collaborated under the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA’s) Shared Services Alliance for their IT outsourced services.

Speaking on behalf of the joint team project team which managed the process of awarding the contract , Keith Gibson Project Manager for the Shard Services Alliance, said: “This is a very significant contract for all the businesses involved. It signals a period of significant change with the new contract having a strong focus on investment and future benefits realisation. It will reduce costs by simplifying IT support arrangements and provides a solid platform for future developments.”

“The bidding process considers all the bids against a wide range of factors, including technical capability, benefits realisation (including cost savings), cost, experience, service levels and innovation,” he added. “Overall Atos emerged as the preferred bidder from that process, and we are looking forward to working with them.”

Ursula Morgenstern, CEO for Atos in the UK & Ireland, said: “This is an important new contract win for Atos. The chance to help the NDA family to fulfil its mission by dramatically improving their ICT estate and bringing the delivery costs down dramatically is an exciting opportunity. We have a strong heritage in the nuclear side of the energy market and this new contract will allow us to broaden our experience of the role that ICT plays in the decommissioning market.”
