Deloitte’s Energy and Resources group received a boost last month, with Geoffrey Cann relocating to Australia from the Canadian member firm and Matthew Donaldson returning home after working in the London office of the UK member firm.

Deloitte Australia’s Energy & Resources Leader, Keith Jones, said that the pair would be based in the Brisbane office but that the national practice as a whole would benefit from their decades of international experience in the resources sector.

“Both Geoff and Matt are experienced operators in the oil and gas industry, and they’ll bring a new level of skill and insight that will be hugely beneficial to clients, particularly on the east coast market where operators are confronting a number of hurdles in realising the potential of a new LNG export market there,” Mr Jones said.

Mr Cann, a consulting partner, said the coal seam gas industry in Queensland was facing some unique challenges and he was looking forward to working with clients to help overcome them.

“Coal seam gas is going to be the backbone of the east coast energy market in decades to come but it is a relatively new and dynamic industry here. Transforming it into a thriving LNG export market is going to be challenging for operators and I think there is a lot of room to apply the experiences of mature international markets to the benefit of those east coast operators.”

“Similarly, there’s the opportunity to learn from some really sophisticated operations in Queensland’s coal seam gas industry and share those lessons with the international industry to promote the region to investors keen to know more about the Australian market,” Mr Cann said.

Mr Donaldson has spent more than 15 years in London, working directly for multinational oil and gas companies, and then as an auditor and advisor to broad range of oil and gas clients. He said he was excited to be returning to Australia and to be taking a more active role in Deloitte’s mining group.

“In many ways, the mining and oil and gas industries are very similar, and I’ve been enjoying the opportunity to build my industry knowledge with mining clients in Australia since I’ve been back,” Mr Donaldson said.

“I will be maintaining a strong connection to the oil and gas industry, but this is also an exciting time to be involved in the mining sector here. Hopefully I can use my oil and gas experience to deliver some new insights for many of Deloitte’s Australian mining clients.”
