Deloitte staff complete ‘four laps of the earth’ in £1 million month for charity
This contribution to the firm’s chosen charity partners has been raised through all manner of events and activities. The inaugural Deloitte Ride Across Britain saw 100 partners and employees cycle through strong winds and rain as they departed John O’Groats on a thousand-mile ride to Land’s End. 1,000 partners and staff worked up a sweat running the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge as temperatures in London soared into the high twenties.
Through these two events alone, Deloitte employees cycled and ran more than 100,000 miles – the equivalent of four laps of the earth.
Heather Hancock, Managing Partner in charge of corporate responsibility at Deloitte, said: “Deloitte people are renowned for setting high standards in everything we do. Raising £1million in just one month is a landmark achievement: it shows that we apply the same philosophy to our impact in society.
“We’ve achieved this huge sum through ambition, dedication and a relentless focus on the causes we care about. It’s more than just the money – it’s the personal time, the team support, the stretching personal challenges – that add up to a really special achievement.
“I’m extremely proud of this wonderful contribution, and what we as a firm have collectively achieved. And it’s inspiring colleagues across the firm to do even more in the future.”
Other activities which contributed to the £1m windfall for charities included a raffle at the annual partner meeting, Give as you Earn salary donations and hundreds of small events across the UK such as quiz nights, team competitions, cake bakes and auctions.
The charities which benefit from this fundraising include:
• British Paralympic Association
• Help for Heroes
• Children with Leukaemia
• Cancer Research UK
• The African Rainforest Trust
Jason Norris, a senior associate in the firm’s tax practice, said: “Without a shadow of doubt, being part of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain was the highlight of both my Deloitte career and my personal life experience to date. I feel proud to have helped the firm raise this incredible sum which will make a significant difference to the lives of people across the world.”
Deloitte’s next major fundraising event will take place in October, when 100 Deloitte employees will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, all in the name of charity.
The climbers will work as a team with colleagues from across the firm to reach the summit with the aim of raising £250,000 for Deloitte’s National Charity Partners: Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes and Children with Leukaemia, and for Deloitte’s partnership with the African Rainforest Trust.
In addition to fundraising, during the past year Deloitte have provided more than £5 million of pro-bono and discounted professional services to charity and contributed more than 44,000 hours through community volunteering initiatives.
