Deloitte UK supports future leaders

Deloitte will host a three-day Summer School event for the Powerlist Foundation, the UK charity, to help equip young people from ethnic minority backgrounds with professional leadership qualities.

The inaugural Summer School, which began on Monday in London, will draw on the best of Deloitte’s expertise from all its sectors, combined with the insight and inspiration of trustees from the Powerlist Foundation. The Summer School consists of intense networking, mentoring and panel sessions with forty high-performing university undergraduate students, all of who are predicted an upper second class degree, with many on track for first class degrees.

The overall purpose of the Summer School is to give participants the opportunity to understand and develop leadership skills and all of the delegates will be challenged to present at the end of the three days, their understanding of business in the 21st century, as well as their thoughts on what it takes to be a successful leader. The students, from universities across the country, have been sourced and selected by Powerful Media Ltd, the publishing and media consultancy firm, as part of its Future Leaders initiative.

Heather Hancock, managing partner for Talent and Brand at Deloitte, said: “The Summer School will prepare participants for the world of work and introduce them to a myriad of new contacts and learning. From our point of view, it will also let us showcase the many fascinating careers we have to offer at Deloitte.”

Hancock believes the Summer School format will help the students enormously as it will provide them with the opportunity to learn more about a whole host of professions, and importantly help them understand the nature of professional leadership in the 21st century. She added: “We are delighted to be hosting this event that will help prepare some of Britain’s brightest young people for when they begin their professional careers. Deloitte always looks for ambitious and talented students who are keen to learn in a fast paced environment and we constantly strive to make the firm a diverse and dynamic place to work.”

Ken Olisa OBE, Chairman of the Powerlist Foundation, said: “The Powerlist Foundation is all about sharing success with tomorrow’s leaders. We are committed to improving the lives of others and believe that this is best achieved through effective leadership. The Summer School is part of this drive, and we are fortunate enough to have an excellent stock of trustees and other supporters. Deloitte’s generosity in hosting this year’s event is a huge boost for such a fledgling charity.

“This is the first of a whole range of initiatives we are working on to make our vision a reality, including the possibility of establishing a Leadership Academy and a programme to provide life-changing scholarships for young people who have demonstrated both educational excellence and who would benefit from further developing the leadership qualities that we believe the Powerlist Foundation can help facilitate.”
