New IT company launches with big ambitions

March 23, 2007

T-Systems in South Africa is a major supporter of the founding of Tirisano-Mogo, one of the first black women-empowered and black-owned ICT companies in South Africa. T-Systems is confident that this newcomer can carve a niche in the ultra-competitive local IT industry.

Tirisano-Mogo, which launched in Midrand this week, has the goal of becoming one of the top networking and security solutions companies in Africa. Much of the seed capital and infrastructure for Tirisano-Mogo was provided by information and communications technology (ICT) provider T-Systems as part of its ongoing drive to develop a new breed of successful black entrepreneurs in the IT industry.

Mardia van der Walt-Korsten, CEO of T-Systems in South Africa, says her company has always taken the view that effective black economic empowerment is critical to local business success. "From the start, we have set out to participate in the transformation of this country and the broader ICT industry and to create a sustainable economy for ourselves and those around us," said Van der Walt-Korsten.

According to Tirisano-Mogo MD, Melanie Chetty, "We want to build our brand presence and credibility as the first black women-empowered company in a technology-driven industry. We are going to move beyond simply being a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) company to being seen as a company that adds value and can make a difference."

Tirisano-Mogo currently has a 70 percent BEE shareholding of which 30 percent has been allocated to five black women and one black male. "We are proud of our heritiage and will continue to grow our business and provide opportunities for other previously disadvantaged individuals in this highly competitive industry," says Chetty.

Lechabile, which started as a seven-person start-up in 1998, is another company successfully incubated by T-Systems is. It has since grown into a successful black-owned company with nearly 100 employees and a string of top corporate clients. T-Systems has also been involved in four similar projects.
