Deloitte UK, the business advisory firm, has an unlikely star. This weekend the film Morris: A Life With Bells On, about a Morris dancer who finds fame on the California folk circuit will be shown for the first time in London cinemas. Sanjay Shah, a Deloitte consultant plays a ‘hard man’ Morris dancer in the film.
The independent film nearly didn’t see the light of day, made on a budget of £500,000 by the husband-and-wife team of Lucy Akhurst and Charles Thomas Oldham. Filmed and produced between Summer 2007 and Spring 2008, the economic downturn meant that Morris struggled to find a distributor.
Undeterred by the reluctance of major distributors to take a risk on a low budget film, the producer and director began an innovative marketing campaign – they privately released the film in village halls and community centres throughout South West England and premiered it at the Seattle Film Festival.
Sanjay Shah said: “The film is a cross between This is Spinal Tap and The Full Monty. It was great fun to act in, especially learning from well-known professionals. A group of Deloitte consulting colleagues are coming along to see me make my big screen debut!”
Ed Shedd, Lead Media Partner at Deloitte said: “Sanjay’s starring turn is another fine example of the many different ways Deloitte’s Media team are part of the pulse of the UK media industry.”
